The Anxious Sleeper.

You haven't forgotten how to sleep. You've learned to be afraid of it.

What's actually happening.

You know a lot about sleep. You've read the books, tracked the data, optimised the conditions. And the more carefully you manage it, the more fragile it seems to get.

When sleep becomes something you monitor, evaluate, and work hard at, your brain classifies it as a high-stakes activity. And high-stakes activities activate your alerting response. The moment you get into bed and ask "will tonight be a good night?", your nervous system begins preparing for a possible threat. That preparation is physiologically incompatible with sleep.

This is what researchers call psychophysiological insomnia: the anxiety about sleep becomes the primary cause of the sleep difficulty. It's a loop. And it tightens the harder you try to break it by trying harder.

Why what you've tried hasn't worked.

More tracking. More optimisation. More research. All of these feed the part of you that's treating sleep as a problem to be solved, which keeps the alert system engaged. You cannot think your way out of this one. The solution is not more information. It's less effort.

What actually helps.

Learning to disengage from the outcome. This is called stimulus control and cognitive defusion in clinical sleep science, but at its heart it comes down to one thing: giving your body permission to sleep without making it perform. Sleep is a passive process. It cannot be achieved. It can only be allowed.

The paradoxical truth at the centre of this: people who stop trying to sleep often start sleeping better. Not because they gave up, but because they removed the very pressure that was preventing it.

One thing to try tonight.

Instead of going to bed to sleep, go to bed to rest. Give yourself explicit permission to be awake all night if that's what happens. Tell yourself: I don't need to sleep tonight, I just need to rest. Then notice what happens when the pressure lifts even slightly. You may be surprised.

The 7-Night Reset was built for a body like yours, and Days 4 and 7 will especially resonate. If you want to understand the specific thought patterns and beliefs that have built this loop for you, a Strategy Session is where we untangle that together.
